My son told me never to leave this hat behind- Museveni

President Museveni has opened up on his trade mark hat, saying that it was imposed on him by his son, Maj Gen Muhoozi Kanierugaba.

President Museveni was speaking during a question and answer session moderated by Sangu Delle the Chief Executive Officer, Golden Palm Investments, Ghana, at the sidelines of the 4th Africa Global Business Forum in UAE, Dubai.

“I was told by my son not to go out without the hat. I spend most of my time outdoors in the tropics. My son told me the hat will protect me from the sun. That’s the story of my hat,” Museveni said.

Mr Museveni is known for his signature hat, which many political commentators have claimed is one way of identifying him on the ballot. Others have claimed the hat is for security reasons for it contains jammers and is bullet proof.

The global policy journal claims that Museveni wears a hat because it is associated with farming.

“Museveni wears a hat associated with farming (most Ugandans are farmers), with the old village organisation of the Ugandan society (many Ugandans see the imposition of new sub region/sub county divisions as overly political and without historical legitimacy), with the peasant (most Ugandans are poor), and with rural trading centers (which were slow to warm up to Museveni),” the journal claims.

“For illiterate voters or those who do not follow politics, he runs radio advertisements asking them to simply ‘vote for the old man with a hat’ and gives away T-shirts showing him wearing the hat in areas where he, or his party, has historically been unpopular.”

President Yoweri Museveni is in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) where he is attending the 4th Africa Global Business Forum hosted by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce at Dubai's Madinat Jumeirah centre. The forum gathers hundreds of businessmen and private sector leaders for a two-day discussion on increasing investment on the African continent.

The conference was attended by African presidents that included Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, Paul Kagame of Rwanda, that of Seychelles, Mauritius and Ghana's Vice President.
